Intensive GreenRoofs
|
|
The
Intensive GreenRoof is also called the Roof Garden. With turf, with
big
trees, bushes, walkways, ponds and other water features with benches and
playgrounds. Even driveways for trucks and fire fighting engines are possible. Almost everything is possible. The only limiting factor is the
loading capacity of the roof and the structure. |
 |
|
 |
Intensive GreenRoofs
are mostly built on underground garages,
so that the underground garage will
not be recognized, hidden
under vegetation. But also the GreenRoof is not
recognized as a greenroof anymore, since the surface is on the same level
with
the surrounding landscape. But Intensive GreenRoofs can also
be build
on higher floors is the loading capacity is sufficient. Many Hotels and
advanced office building have Roof Gardens to provide
additional space for
relaxation and recreation. Intensive GreenRoofs require maintenance like a
common garden: watering, pruning, mowing the grass and more. |

However
a good designer will choose light
substrates soils which
retain allot of water, so that the water consumption
can be reduced.
Although nearly all kind of plants are suitable, some
highly aggressive
plants should be avoided. Bamboo with it's very aggressive
roots can
penetrate even the best waterproofing membrane, other plants, so
called pioneer plants such as some species of maple (ACER), willow
(SALIX)
or fire-thorn (PYRACANTHA) can be highly aggressive
too. If those plants
have to be planted for some reasons, special
measures to avoid damages of the waterproofing membrane
should
be build into the GreenRoof System. The weight of an Intensive GreenRoof ranges from about 145 kg
to a
few tons per square meter, the build-up height from 15 – over 100 cm.
But more than 120 cm isn't
necessary, even for the tallest tree.
